Our fabrication department handles cutting, bending, forming and welding of mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium. MIG, TIG and MMA welding processes cover the range of material types and wall thicknesses commonly encountered in structural fabrication, frame building and engineering assembly. Fabrications are produced from customer drawings or 3D models, with component layouts checked for squareness, alignment and dimensional accuracy at key stages before final welding is completed.

Where fabricated structures require machined features, W&K Precision's combined fabrication and machining capability means welded assemblies can move directly to a machining centre for drilling, boring, milling or turning without leaving the site. This removes the coordination delays and potential errors that arise from splitting fabrication and machining between separate suppliers. The result is a fabricated assembly with precision-machined bores, faces and interfaces that arrives ready for installation or further assembly.

New fabrications are built from customer drawings or 3D models. Where no drawing exists, a physical sample or brief discussion of required dimensions provides a sufficient starting point. Three welding processes are available: MIG (metal inert gas), TIG (tungsten inert gas) and MMA (manual metal arc). MIG welding suits higher-volume structural work and thicker materials. TIG welding delivers cleaner, more precise welds on thinner materials and stainless steel where quality and appearance are critical. MMA welding provides flexibility for positional welding. The selection of process depends on the material, joint design and quality requirements of each individual job.

Fabrication and welding services cover mild steel, structural steel, stainless steel and aluminium. Mild steel is the most common material for structural fabrications, frames, guards and general steelwork. Stainless steel is used in food processing, pharmaceutical, hygienic and marine applications where corrosion resistance or surface hygiene is a priority. Aluminium fabrication is suited to lightweight structures and enclosures. The suitability of other materials should be discussed at the enquiry stage, as not all metals are readily weldable.

Where a welded assembly requires precision-machined features such as bored holes, flat datum faces, tapped threads or profiled surfaces, having fabrication and machining capability on the same site means both operations can be completed without moving the work between suppliers. This is particularly useful for assemblies that must maintain tight dimensional relationships between machined and fabricated features, as the part does not need to be re-datumed after transfer to a separate machining facility.

One-off and bespoke fabrications are a standard part of the workload at W&K Precision. Replacement frames, brackets, guards, supports and enclosures are produced from drawings or adapted from a physical sample or sketch. Bespoke fabrications for unusual applications, modifications to existing structures, and purpose-built assemblies are all handled on the same basis as production batches. Every fabrication is checked for dimensional accuracy and weld quality before it is released.

A dimensional drawing, sketch or 3D CAD model is the most useful starting point for a fabrication quotation. The drawing should indicate overall dimensions, material grade, wall or section thickness, weld specifications and any surface finish or treatment requirements. Where no drawing exists, a physical sample or a detailed description of the required item provides a basis for discussion and an indicative quotation. Required quantity and delivery date should also be included with the enquiry.

Repair fabrication is regularly carried out on worn, cracked, damaged or modified structures. New sections are cut and welded in to replace damaged material, brackets are reinforced or replaced, and modifications are made to existing frames and structures to accept new equipment. Before committing to a repair, an assessment of the item establishes whether fabrication repair is cost-effective or whether replacement of the whole item is more practical. W&K Precision can advise after examination.

In most cases, the material used for a repair fabrication or replacement section can be matched to the original, provided the grade is known or can be inferred from the application. For structural applications requiring a specific certified grade, material certificates confirming the grade and test results are available from stockholders and can be passed on to the customer. Where the original material is unknown, the most appropriate grade for the application can be selected with guidance.

Surface treatments including shot blasting, priming and painting are available through subcontract finishing facilities for fabrications requiring corrosion protection or a specific painted finish. Stainless steel fabrications can be supplied with a linished, brushed or polished finish to suit the application and desired appearance. Surface treatment requirements should be stated in the original enquiry so they can be factored into the overall lead time and total quotation figure.
